Hi,

I can't see any threads or anywhere had these discussions before.

I had built a HTPC using ASUS-M2A-VM HDMI MB, it has Realtek ALC883 hda 6-channel codec.

I am currently connecting my Yamaha RX-657 AV using MB's Line Out port only.

I have a choice to using all 3 ports (6-channel) from MB to the Yamaha AV.

My question is, can you tell the difference using all 3 ports against just a Line Out from MB?

I had tried both configuration, and I had played a few movies (e.g. X-Men, Pearl Harbour) and CD's, and I could not tell the differences.

Please advice, your comment is valuable.

Have you tried optical S/PDIF for sound? That's usually the preferred way to send sound to a receiver.

You probably need to configure the DVD-playing software (e.g. PowerDVD, WinDVD, whatever) to output 6-channel sound, and also configure your sound card itself to output 6-channel sound. The default for both may be 2.

I agree with rwpritchett that using S/PDIF is a much better way to go, if your mobo and receiver have the option. Either coax or optical is fine. Then setup your DVD software to ouput to S/PDIF, and you'll be able to get as much as DTS-ES or DD-EX (6.1), if your movie, software, sound card and receiver support it.

Agreed youll get much better sound, and better support from a S/PDIF or digital connection from sound card to reviever. Apparently that motherboard has a S/PDIF output module that you can install.

If thats the AMP you have it also supports the digital inputs
