Graphic glitches while gaming - texture skewing

Last response: in Graphics & Displays

I have been having this problem for a while, my textures seem to stretch off their models while gaming, it seems to happen in everygame i play. Ive tried updating my bios, disabling my overclocking, updating my drivers and cooling my system. My system currently runs at 90F without cooling and 75-85f with cooling.

Here is a screenshot. You can see that the arm of one of the characters has its texture skewed off into the sky. It happens every so often, sometimes it never happens for hours sometimes the game is riddiled with multiple models skewing their textures. I have no idea how to fix this problem or really what causes them.If anyone could help me, please do., I will attach my dx diag as well.

Is it only in that game or is it all of them?
February 2, 2008 8:51:44 AM

Certain games...

Like, i dont get this error while playing knights of teh old republic, jade empire, gears of war, unreal tournement 3.

But i get the error when i play call of duty 4, cabal, holic online, and a few other mmos i play.

The error only remains until i reset the graphics in someway, such as changing the resolution, turning anti alaising on and off, etc.

Seems liek you have the latest Catalyst driver (v8.1), and you're experiencing these corruptions in more than one game.
IMO, there are two possible reasons for what you're experiencing:
1. You overclocked your video card RAM too high
2. Your video card RAM is faulty

I recently had very similar symptoms with a Sapphire Radeon 1950XT (not only visual artifacts in 3D games, but also games and Windows crashes), and I had it replaced (to a new 1950XT), and now everything runs stable and without any artifacts.

BTW, I noticed your display resolution "Current Mode: 1792 x 1344 (32 bit) (60Hz)".
If you have an LCD screen, I suggest that you verify that this resolution is really your screen's native resolution. Otherwise you're probably suffering from degraded quality. If you have a CRT screen and not an LCD one, then you need to adjust your refresh rate to at least 75 (recommended 85).

My monitor is CRT, i try to force its refresh rate to 85 but it just seems to be ignored.

Im not sure on how to force it, ati tools doesnt seem to be working for me.

I dont overclock my video card, how can i test if it is the ram that is giving me trouble?

If you installed the Catalyst driver including the Control Center, then you should open the Control Center and manually specify your monitor capabilities (max resolution and refresh rate). Only then you'll be able to really send the desired refresh rate to your monitor.

Also, I'd stay away from ATITool, it can really f**k up your settings.
It could mess with the mechanism that changes the video card clocks from 2D mode to 3D mode, and it could generally effect your video card stability, even though you don't use it's overclocking capabilities.

Regarding video ram testing, try this:

Ive been using tray tools for so long ive become dependant on it, i prefer it to the catalyst, should i simply remove it and stick to the control panel?

For normal users, the only ATITool's real useful feature I could think of is custom fan settings (usually for an overheating card). For everything else I'd stick to the Control Center.
As I see it, the less messing with your setting using 3rd party applications, the better (talking from 15 years of IT experience). Yes, custom settings could help you get the last 1% from your card, but that could be at a price of instability...

You can define your monitor capabilities in the control center and even overclock your card from the overdrive screen.
But, first you need to sort out your visual artifact issues.

I dont think it is the video card though, sometimes it never glitches for hours, and soemtimes i cant even play for a few minutes without seeing the textures, i try overclocking, underclocking but i just cant figure this thing out.

The best method of confirming that it's not the card, is to install this card in another computer and run some tests.
That's what I've done with my card, and then the retailer I bought it from ran some tests on it too, in their own lab computer.
