I'm pretty sure it could be played, but wouldn't play back as High
Definition.

DVD players use red lasers which don't have the enough storage capabilities
to transfer an HD picture. Hence the term, Blu-Ray High Def DVD player.

As an intuitive guess, I would say yes, since the same amount of data is
being read playing a normal DVD movie. The only question would be, not so
much the bandwidth of the DVD ROM drive (most of them can handle the
speed), but the bandwidth of the decompression software and the computer
that's doing that end of the job. Again, most modern engines are probably
up to it--just don't try it on an old Pentium 133.

Just my "back of the envelope" guess, though. Let us know how the test
works out.

Apples and oranges. Assuming the DivX or WM file fits on the DVD-ROM, it
should play back in real time without too much trouble. The compression is
quite a bit greater than with ordinary DVD material, and most DVD-ROM
drives are faster than a regular DVD.
