Can't access hard drive from dead laptop

My laptop died so I pulled the hard drive and converted it to and external USB drive. The problem I'm having is that I can't access it because I had set a user password on my laptop. Now whenever I try to access it from my desktop, I get an access denied message and nowhere can I find a place to enter the password to access it. So now I have a good working 2.5" external drive, but I can't access it to retrieve my old file.
