Hi, I'm really interested in the 9800 gx2 cards which are supposed to come out soon. What would be the best mobo for a nvidia quad sli setup? I saw pictures of the quad sli setup and all I can say is wow. Those graphics cards are probably the biggest yet. Are there any motherboards out that have room for those cards (w/o blocking other things)? Also, I was thinking about getting a q9450 when it comes out. Which motherboard offers the best support for that? All input is appreciated.

An evga 790i mobo would fit the bill. You'll want the 790i chipset anyway. By the way you do realize these will be priced around the $599 mark?

Oh well i guess some people need bleeding edge...

But what's the point of having ddr3 ram? The ddr3 ram that is out right now is barely faster than good ddr2, but it is so much more expensive. Can you tell me about some more practical alternatives?

I just read your other reply to my question in the graphics card section. If the 3870 x2 does turn out to be more economical, what would be the best mobo for that? Would there be any mobos that could handle that and a q9450? Or would all of those mobos be married to the mediocre phenoms?

Actually I would like to know what sort of gaming you want to do? If your looking at multiple GPU solutions have you considered SLI with a 790i and perhaps dual 8800GT/9600GT?

I'm running the 3870X2 with a Asus Maxiumus Formula DDR2 q6600 , CrossfireX is supported for quad GPU. ATI haven't tied there GPUs to the spider platform - they'll run on an intel chipset fine.

Personally I think it depends what resolution you plan on playing at. Multiple graphics card solutions work best at higher resolutions while you won't see much difference at lower ones.

One word of warning - 3870X2 drivers for linux are non existent.

I am interested in building a rig that can play the latest games with a solid resolution. Do you know if the X48 chipset would be any good?

if your going for the X48 chipset go for the Asus Rampage since it supports DDR2 (if thats the way you want to go) You can play the latest games at a "solid resolution" with a single card solution (8800GTS). You'll only recognize a performance increase with higher resolutions over 1680x1050.

From what I read there seems to be absolutely no difference between the X48 and the X38 series. Buy the Maximus Formula, its a good solid board thats pretty decent at Oc'ng.

Looks like a good mobo to me. Thanks for the help :)

Now that the mobo is out, may I ask where you got that extremely inaccurate msrp? Here is the lowest price that I found for the 790i.

It costs $369.99USD. I know that is a lot, but in about 2 months, it should be perfectly affordable. Also, there will be new ddr3 ram coming out by then that will be specially designed for this board.

Acidpython was saying that $599 is what each 9800 GX2 would cost. I'd expect to pay alot more for it if you are going to buy anytime soon though.
