i had a 6400+ at 3.5 and bought a phenom the day they come out with a asus m3a32mvp deluxe mobo and clocked phenom to its "stable" limit of 2651mhz (11*241) and have indured ever since. Question: i want best performance. will i be better with my 3.5ghz 6400+ of my phenom at 2.65ghz. i do NO editing, folding. I Only game, surf, download, and the odd burn here and there

For what you are doing, you would be better off with the 6400+.

i would say if that 6400+ is a dual core then it will be faster unless you play supreme comander.

i do play all the latest RTS, FPS and some RPG, will a 3870x2 be "slowed" because of going back to a 6400+

Nice MB by the way. Did you say that you have both CPUs? Run a couple of benchmarks to compare. PCmark06 and the Sisoftware suite. We all would be intrested to see that comparison.

I'll do the benchmarking for the phenom. but the 6400 is currently in use in another system and cant be changed over

Man thats an unfortunate situation. Yeah. I would say see which proc plays your game the best and go from there.

You could take a $20 to $30 hit and sell the slower one on ebay Im sure. or hold off and in a year most new games will deffinatly work best on the quad

The 6400x2 @ 3.5ghz will piss all over your Phenom. Obviously you have noticed that it was quicker otherwise you wouldn't have asked the question. There are loads of benchmarks that compare the 2 at in 95% of them the stock 6400x2 wins.

No a 3870X2 will not be bottlenecked by either cpu.

to tell you the truth i didn't notice a "whole" lot of differecnce but was think in that general direction the the 6400 would be better off

For single threaded gaming go with the 6400. For multi-threaded tasks (editing, encrypting, newer games like Crysis) go with the Phenom.

The 6400+ is way faster even though you hardly have an OC on it.

Not sure which ram your useing but you are often better off with faster ram and droping the CPU multi down to an even full number and then raising the HT.

Check out the 50% OC Optron's on stock volts in my profile.

If you are talking about games, an AMD X2 at 3.5Ghz is (middle to high) enough, lets talk about the video card you've got
