hey all, just got my new rig:

amd x2 6400+ black edition, ocz reaperx 4gb, zalman 9700, asus m2n32-sli deluxe...

got win 2003 enterprise 64-bit running on it... but before i even bothered installing anything i went right into the bios (like any geek does with a new rig). my main concern is the fact that im hovering (in the bios upon first boot), at 40 degrees C. now, it pretty much never went above 40, maybe 41 or so but no higher. took the HSF off removed all the thermal and reapplied, same deal. so i started questioning maybe the probe was/is bad, needless to say i get windows installed run pcprobe II and im now sitting at 30c/87f.

My main concern is, will this go down over the course of the next few days (like the zalman book says "over the next 7-10 days it will get "optimal performance" ) or is this something more serious? also, pcprobe is saying my mobo is sitting at 28c/82f

like i said, my main concern is when should i actually "worry" about temps? i.e. what is a "high, but not high enough to fry anything temp"?

thanks for your help

Your thermal paste needs a week or so to "peak".....Continued on / off cycles will help it set and you should see stable temps in 7 - 10 days as long as you let the machine cycle on and off and not leave it running 24/7.

you should only worry about loading temp, Please keep in the mind, the cpu fan may be temp control, so it will spin slow when cpu is idle.
you can download core temp and check your cpu spec.

Those idle temps are good. The important temps are the load ones. Remember, that is a 125W cpu so it will run hotter than most processors.

so when i run prime, othors or sp2004 what would "average" load temps be for the 6400?

i've left this running in windows while i was eating (30 min), and cpu is hovering at 86-87f, mobo is at 82f.

The temps will depend on a lot of factors such as ambient temp, case airflow, etc. As long as the temps stay below 60C, you have nothing to worry about.
