I'm not sure it's a good thing too go with DDR3 for now, better to stick with DDR2, cheaper at that time. Get 4 or 8 gig of sli-ready memory. it will be run almost the same as DDr3-1333. for a lot cheaper. They had a review here on the DDR3.

RAM that is SLi-ready doesn't really mean anything... It doesn't hurt, but it doesn't help, as you usually have to set timings manually anyways (plus, he's on an Intel-based system).
I'd go for something like this:
Asus P5K-E/WIFI AP for ~$150
2 kits of the 4GB G.Skill DDR2-1000 RAM for 8Gb total (well, that's if you're gonna be running a 64-bit OS, I would recommend such) for ~$115 per kit
You'll have a much better system for a LOT less money.

What is this build for? Gaming, database work, video encoding? I assume gaming, what with the 8800GT.
What is your screen resolution? If it's 1920x1200 or more you need an HD 3870X2 or a SLI/Crossfire setup.
I'd replace the Raptor with a WD7500AAKS for about the same money. Almost the same speed, 5 times the space, quieter.
Assuming a screen resolution of 1680x1050 or less, i.e. no need for SLI/Crossfire, I'd replace the mobo with one of the following: P5K-E, P5K Deluxe, GA-P35-DS4, GA-P35-DS3L, GA-P35-DS3R, aBit IP35 Pro. Compare features at newegg. Of course, use DDR2-800 with any of those. If it's just for gaming, 2GB is enough for most people.
For higher screen resolutions, a good combination is eVGA 780i with 8800GTS G92 512MB (so you can add a second card later and do SLI). Another is GA-X38-DS4 with HD 3870X2 (so you can add another card and do Crossfire).
I don't like the 8800GT. Too much trouble with heating, too little overclocking ability.
Good case/PSU. There are PSUs I like more, like the Silencer 610W. (750W for SLI/Crossfire).
CPU/DVD/OS?
Will you overclock the CPU?

I am using it for some programming ex : visual studio and sql forms etc as well as gaming. i am going to watercool in the long run and overclock and was considering changing the cpu to the quad 6600. but that lowers my fsb from 1333
my tower is antec 900
i dont care to much for the dvd drive so long as it runs stable..
The current mobo i have selected only suppports ddr3. also i heard alot of bad things from that Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R ppl saying it reboots in a loop and has occured alot.
i dont like vista so for now il use win xp pro or 64 bit

So, the GA-P35C-DS3R reboots in a loop, really? Mine never did, in 6 months. I suspect some of those who get this problem are using memory outside the QVL (qualified vendor list) listed on Gigabyte's site. I won't recommend the P35C even if mine works fine. I'd prefer the DS4 if I bought today, just because it has features like a second video card slot and Firewire and better overclocking.
Q6600 is good for Visual Studio work, if your projects are big. Mine for example is pretty big (2MB of source code) and the quad helps, especially if you add Oracle and IIS in the picture. I noticed that VS.Net 2005 needs a much faster CPU and more RAM than the 2003 version, and I expect VS.Net 2008 to be even worse. Get 4 GB of RAM.
You can easily reach 3.2 GHz with Q6600/Tuniq Tower. I've seen people reach 3.6 and 3.7 too, but that's not so easy.
I'd suggest Crucial Ballistix RAM - it has a great reputation for overclocking.
that was the ram i first had in mind before i had a look at the new mobo. Im kind of nervous because im planning on buying in about a week and cant get a solid list together.
does that ram work well with the GA-P35C-DS3R?
id probably get 4 1 gig dims, and the GA-P35C-DS3R cuz its cheaper and it will still work for me.
EDIT: i heard there was a small problem that can be easily fixed. the Crucial ram operates at 2.2v and the mobo default is 1.8v but i can just change that during bootup

Do you need eSATA? If you don't, get the GA-P35-DS3R. Compared to the P35C, it loses eSATA and the DDR3 support, it's cheaper, and it overclocks better.
That Tracer memory costs $110 for 2 GB and gets some scary reviews at newegg (for example a guy used 24 of them and 19 died). I'd try this one instead:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820146565 Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
($50 after rebate). I'm not sure if you get rebates for two sets or just one. Maybe ask a friend to order one for you.
The GA-P35-DS3R and this DDr2-800 do work together, you just need to adjust timings in the BIOS for best results. Here's a quote from a review:
Quote :
Pros: I bought this pair of DDR2 RAM back in August 2007, and never had problems with it. They run in Dual Channel Memory mode in my Gigabyte P35-DS3R motherboard. Running XP & Vista is a breeze thanks to these.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: My motherboard automatically set the timings to 5-5-5-18. I was able to change it in the BIOS to 4-4-4-12, which is the manufacturer's timings, with no problem. Overvolting is not necessary to do this.
should i go and get only ddr2 800?
im going to be running a quad core and with a 1066 fsb. personally that ram seems slow to me but i never used it before.
Two people at newegg said they were using it with Q6600 at 3.2 GHz. Yeah, you can do better than that.
Why don't you send a private message to plguzman and ask him for a little advice. Here's his signature:
Q6600 G0 @ 3.7Ghz | Abit IP35 PRO Rev.1.1 | OCZ Plat. Rev.2 4Gb PC6400 | BFG 8800GTS 640Mb @ 650/1900 | Dell 2405FPW | WD 500Gb SATA II | Antec Nine Hundred | Logitech G7 & G15 | Tuniq Tower | Antec NeoPower 650W | Vista HP 64 SP1
OK! last item on the agenda before i get my final list!
i had a look at crucial 800 ram but i think that i can do better than that..
Crucial Ballistix (BL2KIT12864AA1065) DDR2 1066Mhz PC2 8500 2GB Kit (1GB x 2) 240-pin
is what i would prefer.. has anyone had any problems with 1066mhz crucial mem in the GA-P35C-DS3R mobo i know aevm told me that the crucial ballistix tracer memory isnt very reliable but im unsure about the 1066mhz crucial.
the major issue i think i might have if i get 2 pairs of this ram is getting them to sit at 2.2v, since its default to 1.9, would i need some other ram to boot the comp up at first and change the setting or can i boot 2.2v ram with 1.8v power?
ram is my weak spot so any help apreciated!

No you won't mess anything up using 2.2v for memory at 800/1066. One thing you might not like is how loud the GPU cooler is on the 8800GT, the 8800GTS has a much better GPU cooler on it with less noise plus will OC most likely to 780-800MHz GPU core. To be honest as of lastnight my second kit of Crucial Ballistix Tracers went bad again , I'll give them one more try and if they fail me again i'll just go for the regular Crucial Ballistix gold dimms. I believe my Crucials went bad again because both kits came from the same batch, therefore...

ok. this looks like my final build below. Im going to be doing it in aprox 2 weeks today, hope it all goes good.
Thanks for all the help guys and aevm. You helped me out a lot.

That PSU is great value for $70, and I can't beat it at that price. I tried. However, if you wait two weeks and the rebate disappears, it will cost $110 or even $130, and for that money there are better choices. (Silencer 610W at $120 for example)
ok i thought i wouldnt have to bug anyone again but before i go to buy the system, does it come with a thermal paste or should i get a good thermal paste for the q6600 if so wich one? and should i use a stock heatsink or get a different one? im not sure if the cpu comes with a fan.. any help on this would be great.
im buying in person at a good canadian retail store, and they are out of stock on the crucial ballistix ram! cuz of a $20 instant rebate in the store. so i was planning on getting this or another type of memory, how well does patriot extreme handle ocing and overall performance, it has good reviews.
anyways guys thanks a lot for all your help! i ended up getting the crucial ram! Im posting from my new comp and damn is it fast! now to have some fun!
