I know that the most likely cause of the fans spinning for a second and then nothing is a misplaced mounting post or other metal grounding the motherboard, but what are the unlikely causes? I have this symptom and my motherboard is not being grounded. I have unplugged everything but the CPU's and the RAM, tried different known good RAM and CPU's, tried 3 different known good PSU's. This was a functional system before I changed the case. No other config or hardware changes. Very carefull about ESD and making sure that the motherboard is not grounded. Will a zapped motherboard exibit this symptom? I have been building computers for a number of years and this has got my stymied.

Take the mobo out of the case and see if it will POST on a piece of cardboard. If it POSTs its shorting to the case, if not the mobo may have gotten damaged with all the switching stuff around.

Helps us if you post some hardware details. CPU/motherboard/PSU/video card/memory etc.

Normally un-connected power connectors to motherboard or underpowered PSU's.
