Windows XP OS & hard drive question

hi i just bought and OEM copy of windows xp pro, it says that it should be installed on a a blank hard drive that has never had antyhing on it, does this mean if i format my drive that i have now to overwrite everything, it still wont be a good idea to put the operating system on it?

you do not say what os is currently on your hdd,,anyway just install it right over what is there it will give you the upgrade option,well it should anyhow..

It will ask you if you want to repair or a clean install, clean means reformat and install fresh.
