Thanks for the replies, seen microcenter last night ... nice to know zip's got it also ... i'll be ordering tonight so hopefully there still in stock by the time the process is taken ...

Reply to darkage

newegg's been out of stock for awhile now ... and tigerdirect is also ... thanks for the link tho.

Reply to darkage

Why would Microcenter be selling it for some $40.00 less?

Reply to topher219

Currently Im deployed over seas and Ill be building a new Computer in Apr sometime when I get back. So I have just over a month to purchase the parts so that they will be waiting for me when I get back. Do I buy E8400 now since two places still have them in stock? Or do I wait till last couple weeks in March and hope for a price drop and gamble that someone still has them in stock? Or possible snag one of the new Quads next month?

Reply to topher219

Just raised the price to $199. I bought the e8400 at $189.

Try for one of the 45nm Quads. At $199 the e8400 is a great choice though.

I agree the $199 is a good price but with Microcenter you also have to consider sales tax and shipping.

I walked in, $189 no shipping. Newegg, ZZF, etc. charge sales tax and shipping where applicable. When the Quads show up, you will have to pay tax and shipping. Obviously, microcenter has the best price on the e8400 if you want one.

microcenter once you add to cart says its no longer available ... "gah"!

Reply to darkage

I was just met with the exact same disappointment, no longer available.

Reply to topher219

Microcenter was out when I went there the first time. They had them back in stock the next day. Keep checking.

Doh... I could have sworn it said in stock. I hate it when the website plays tricks on my browser.

If they are outta stock, thankfully i ordered sunday so i'd be inline come monday morning ... its shipped and will be here tomorrow ... Keep checking, that chip is worth it ... tho if i had to wait any longer i'd of just went with the q6600 which is still a damn good chip ...

Reply to darkage

it was for a little while, then it came back for some reason.

what about the e8500? i haven't seen it around much

Reply to gwolfman

Haven't seen it at all to be honest ... and i doubt it's gonna be worth the wait over the 8400, specially if your looking to pop a quick 4.0g off the cpu .. the 8400 is king ...

Tonight I swaggered into TigerDirect.com and they now have E8400s for 229.99 USD. With estimated two day delivery, I couldn't help but grab one.

nice, zip uses fedex .. and for the record i hate fedex ... it was supposed to be here yesterday and its coming tomorrow .... Newegg had 12 items packed/shipped same day and on my doorstep the next morning on standard shipping .... Depresses me they were out of stock.

I ordered mine from TigerDirect 2 days ago. It said in stock then and all day yesterday (2/20) and now says out of stock. However, my order has not been shipped. It just says "in process at our warehouse." I hope they weren't playing tricks with their quantities. The rest of my upgrade will be getting here tomorrow and I won't be able to do a thing with the parts except look at the pretty boxes till I get my CPU.

Edit: just called TigerDirect and they said it was going to be shipped today. That makes me feel better, I can only pray that it gets here tomorrow . . . I so want to play with my new toy :D

What about the Xeon E3100/E3110 in LGA775?
I read that these are direct drop-in replacements for the E8400, they just say XEON on the outside.
So far I'm seeing prices of $195-$220 for these online, and plenty of availability.

BTW, I put an E8400 in my shopping cart @ Tigerdirect right before I left work last night. I got home and tried to finish my order online, and the E8400 was REMOVED from my cart and no longer available. Every place I saw that had the E8400 in stock a few days ago is now out of stock. About the only option now for one of these is buying it from a no-name outfit for $275+ or from Amazon @ $300.

I checked again with Tigerdirect yesterday and my order is now on backorder. The Customer Service person said that they should be getting more in on Monday and that it looked like mine was the only one on backorder.
