Overclocking questions

Hi!

i have:

e8400 (VID 1.225)
gigabyte x48-ds4
4 gb corsair xms2 dhx ddr800
xigmatek s1283 with retention bracket
coolermaster cm 690

using realtemp

i currently run at 3.6ghz with 1.225 volts, memory at 2.044 volts timings 4-4-4-12 2T. Temps are 38 celsius on idle, 53 on load.

I got it to work at 3.8 ghz with around 1.3 volts with memory timings 5-6-6-20 2T and at 4 ghz around 1.34 volts with memory timings 5-6-6-21 2T. I left timings on auto and i think i could squeeze it a little more manually. I get temps of 41 celsuis idle, 60 on load (ambient was higher than usual).

I didnt change fsb voltage and mch voltage cause i'm not really sure when to do it. First of all i would like to know when it is needed to increase these voltages. Second thing, what is the best setup? higher cpu clock with 5-6-6-21 memory timings or 3.6ghz with 4-4-4-12? Last things what about my temps? I see people with xigmatek s1283 getting better temps... i reseated the heatsink and applied as5 with a credit card (i think i did a great job) but i still get the same temps.

I feel i have to get a little better with OC and understand everything since in a couple weeks my friend plan to get a e2xxx and i will have to oc it to ~3 ghz. I read alot of things but people usually keep fsb and mch voltages for them.

higher clock speed gives better performance then lower clock speeds with lower timings (cpu+memory). I've heard people get the best results with the copper pipe goes directly down the middle of the chip and a little stream of grease is applied along both sides of the pipe. I don't own that heatsink yet (maybe later, mine works fine now), so I can't say for sure.

As a side not, you won't see much benefit at 3.8ghz compared to 3.6 ghz. Or anything higher then 3.6 for that matter. A little but now much. Reset your heatsink, but if the problem persits trie bumping down the volatages.

First time i did not... i used the diagram from as5 website (the paste line) but xigmatek s1283 has not a plain surface and i thought it was not applied correctly.

I reapplied paste with a credit card on the heatsink to fill the pipe holes, thinking it would do better but it stayed the same.

Make sure it is bolted down nice and tight, and that when you push on the heatsink is won't move at all. If it doesn't have the closes contact with your cpu the effect is big. Did you get the retention bracket?
