I've got a new Toshiba LCD Television that I plug my laptop into via the TVs VGA socket. It's not a very good laptop, an old Sony FR315S (www.trustedreviews.com/noteboo [...] -FR315S/p1

I can't seem to use the full size of the TV, I change resolutions but for some reason it seems to stop me at about 1600x1200 and the bar just won't let me go any further. From what I understand the TVs native resolution is 1920 x 1080. So obviously this leaves big gaps at each side of the screen that aren't being used.

I'm using windows XP. Do I need to change drivers or is my laptop just not capable of running an external display at such a high res?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

You can try updating the graphics driver for whatever GPU is currently in the laptop. If that doesn't work, see if there are any tweaking tools available for that GPU that will let you create your own customer resolution.

If that doesn't work, but you still want to have the laptop display the full screen of the TV, go check out Matrox. They've got solutions that will work for you.

So far I havent seen a TV run at 1920x1080 on the VGA input. Highest I have seen is 1300x786. Probably more of a setting on the TV other then the laptop.

Good luck. I hope you get it figured out. I'm hooking up my 42" TV thursday as soon as it arrives. I'm gonna use HDMI for my desktop and the VGA for my laptop.

You may be onto something there, I'm playing around with the TV inout options as we speak. IT may be the TV is just not displaying the picture in widescreen.

Thanks for your help guys and the quick responses

What type of TV is it? 1080p or 720p / 1080i?
