Getting ready to install Vista Home Premium 64 bit as a clean install on a new build:
Phenom 9500, 2GB 1066 Mhz RAM, 4 disk RAID 10- 640 GB, dvd rw, etc

SUDDENLY- I realized that I might not be able to interchangeably work on the files I create and use on my work system which is XP with MS Office 2003 with a 64 bit office suite operating under Vista 64 bit.

I have looked at the documentation but don't seem to find the answer.

Are the files compatible or will the differing file systems make that impossible??

Wringing my hands in Las Vegas- Yup the one in Nevada

I think you'll be ok. I can modify documents I created in 32-bit XP in 64-bit Vista Ultimate. I use Microsoft Office 2003 on both systems.
