P5Q Deluxe 450 FSB Stability Question

I'm aiming to get 4GHz on my E8400 with an Asus P5Q Deluxe, I'm currently getting stuck at about 440 FSB.

The settings I have right now:

Multiplier: 6x
FSB: 445
DIMM: 2.1V (G.skill DDR2-1000 PC8000)
All other voltages auto.
C1E, Spread spectrum off.

I'm getting Orthos halt errors after 1minute, and memtest failures after about 15% of the test.

I know that the CPU can't be the bottleneck.. so I bumped FSB junction and NB voltages to 1.4V but doesn't seem to make any difference at all.

I've tested the memory on default (no OC) and it tests fine so it isn't bad memory...

Anyone have any tips or solutions to achieve a stable 450 FSB? I've read everywhere the P5Q deluxe can achieve at least 500 FSB, could it be I just have a crap board?

Sorry forgot to mention, PCI-e is set at 100mhz.

Also, do you think loosening the timings will help? I don't think my memory is the bottleneck since its DDR21000 and it should have plenty of headroom...

When you say "All other voltages auto.", do you mean, vcore too? If so, try setting vcore yourself. Asus P5Q deluxe has been known to OC to 500 FSB without EPU enabled.

Yep I just tried vcore, up to 1.38V even. No change :(

In fact I just ran Orthos at 420 FSB and it gave an error after 20 minutes.
Forget 450 FSB lol, it doesn't look like its even stable at 420...

I found my P5Q -E to be unstable over 400 FSB, but it behaved pretty much the same all the way up, beyond that. I could boot and all, but XP was like walking on an oil slick. Pretty sure at least one of my Reapers was not really 1066 :)

I didn't really care, as all I wanted was 3.6

ive got a P5e3 deluxe, which I know is a different chipset, but I had exactly the same problem as you. it turned out for me that the northbridge voltage when on auto wasnt high enough. I had to set mine from 1.5v to 1.65v before i'd get stability at 450fsb. try notching yours up a bit and see if that helps.

Just waiting on xtremesystems to activate my account, it is in the "moderation queue" for some reason.

Anyway I a lot of things, including bumping up NB, SB, FSB, CPU.
Upgraded to beta 1201 bios, but still the same.
Loosened my timings to 5-5-5-18 (even though I'm sure my ram isn't bottlenecking since its only running at less than 900 where its DDR1000).
Still unstable.

Also I've noticed not only it isn't stable at 440, it seems like anything above 410 ish will give errors in orthos in less than 5 minutes.

All temps are very low, NB ~ 33 degrees, CPU ~ 30 degrees.

Right now I'm running 400 x 9 and it seems to be stable..

I must be missing something important here, getting really frustated :pt1cable:

Did you try increasing your Common Performance Level, as I mentioned? This helped me. This can be found in the AI Tweaker Menu, set AI Transaction Booster to [MANUAL], and then the Common Performance Level adjustment will appear. Increase it to something higher (it's probably at 5, bump it up to 8 for starters). Hope this helps.

Oh at first I thought you were talking about the PL voltage.

Anyway I changed the common PL, to 8, it didn't even post. I bumped it up to 12 and it posts. I think I see better stability at 420 at CPL 12 but at about 440 it is still same as before, orthos dies in less than a minute.

What does the common performance level & the transaction booster do anyway? Is it safe to boost it up more to see if it helps?

Hmm.. Strangely enough I decided to boost the FSB to 500

Now its running at 500 x 6, and its stable on orthos for over 2 hours now.

So basically if I go lower than 500 FSB, the memory isnt stable and errors out on large FFTs on orthos.

Some memory compatibility issue?

lolmannz,

I'm planning a P5Q for my build. How did your OC effort come out? &are you running 8 GB RAM--if so could you tell me what you're using?

 I recently purchase P5Q.I have E2180 CPU.When i try to set fsb over 400 - 401,402 the bios stop and can't boot my computer.
Is there a wall to 400 on the motherboard or i it is the processor. What i'm doing wrong. The bios is 1611.

This is probably all RAM issues. If you are going to take the FSB beyond 400, the RAM has to handle it.

The easiest way to test is to set your processor to a point that should be stable and overclock just the RAM. If it fails above 800mhz you have your culprit.
