Hey guys,

I'm about to try my first overclock soon, I have been reading a few guides etc over the past few days. I just want to make sure I have the general idea behind it correct.

I'm going to be overclocking a E6300 1.86GHZ on a Gigabyte GA965P DS3 with a Arctic Cooler 7 and Corsair 2GBTWIN2X2048-5400C4.

Here is a link to the memory: http://www.corsair.com/_datasheets [...] 5400C4.pdf
Would this memory be suitable?

So basically what I need to be doing is upping the FSB in stages of about 5mhz each time and then running Prime95 to check for errors. If any errors occur I need to raise the Vcore slightly and try again. Obviously other factors come into account such as PCI-E voltages and DDR2 voltages.

I'm not sure when it comes to the memory though, from what I understand I need to leave the memory multiplyer at 2, as it is relevant to the FSB. Could someone explain this please?

Cheers.

For Intel Core2 CPU's :

CPU speed = fsb * cpu multi so your cpu is 1.86 = 266 (fsb) * 7 (cpu multi)

Ram speed = fsb * 4 (quad pumped)

In the link you provide about your ram, Corsair says they validated them at 675mhz DDR speed which means 337 fsb speed

So technically with that ram you could oc you cpu to 2.36ghz

As for the multiplier it is always best to run ram and fsb synced so yes you should leave it at 2.

Hope this helps and good luck with your oc.

Welcome to the forums!

@smatel7070:
RAM speed = fsb * 2
You are correct 333 * 2 = 667. A little tired, I guess.

You don't need to touch PCI-E voltage. Keep the speed fixed at 100 MHZ.
Keep the memory at 1:1 initially. Don't overclock the memory until you have to. Raise the voltage of the memory when you overclock it.
Good luck!

Thanks alot!

I'm going to get started within 30 minutes!

So would I be able to overclock the RAM to to be able to overclock the CPU past 2.36ghz? Or is that the absoloute maximum that the RAM will allow?

Hope this makes sense.

Cheers

Bring the FSB up to ~333 MHZ (333*7=2,331). After that you will be overclocking CPU and memory. Goes as far as your CPU temperature allows.
Keep temps under 70ยบ at load.

Thanks for the correction evongugg. I'm at work and I was doing 2 things at once :pt1cable:

Update:

Managed to get it to 2.2ghz and running stable. Had to put the Vcore up slightly. I have been trying to get it higher, but it causes Prime95 to error. Tried raising the Vcore even more, but no luck. Should I keep increasing the Vcore until it stops reporting errors? Or could it be something else?

Cheers

Increase the vCore to +10% at most for longevity of the processor.
You could increase Northbridge by +01.v. That might help also.

Thanks for the help.

I'm stuck at 2.2ghz at the moment due to temperature problems I think. It's currently idleing at about 47C, which rises to about 57-60C under load. I've been experiencing some wierd problems with games such as COD4, CSS and Crysis, whereby they crash to desktop, and just recently got a BSOD while palying Crysis. I'm going to refit the heat sink and apply some new thermal grease tomorrow, hopefully that should sort it.

I'm interested in OC my first new build and was just inquiring whether it's easy to ruin your MB, processor, etc? Or if it's unlikely so long as you go OC gradually as the above posts seems to imply? Thanks!
