so, my parents got it for me for christmas, i was anticipating a new build around that time. however, recent issues have arose. and i was not able to build it. now im holding out for the 9800 gx2 and if that does not work out, then the 9800gtx in sli will be my option. or one 3870x2. i have not decided yet. but i need to know if this power suply can handle it. it only has one +12 volt rail, and 70 amps. would this be able to handle more than one graphics card? (sorry for my newbieness.)
I think, if you have a current system, or one that you don't use that often, I'd try the PSU out on that. Put it through some testing on games etc, try and plug in as many cards etc. that you have to draw a lot of power and see if it's any good. But watch it while you're doing it, you don't want it ending up like the ones in the article above. It will probably be fine, seeing as it's newer, but I'd be cautious.
1000W will power whatever you want to throw at it, and then some. The term that comes to mind is overkill. Ultra is known for making some junk PSUs, however the Ultra X3 1000W is not one of them. It got an excellent review from jonnyguru. Here is the link JonnyGURU.com - Ultra Products X3 1000W

then again, JonnyGURU could have gotten a special version of it for review (and some cash under the table). I'd consider that info reliable if it came from at least 3 sources.
I don't think jonnyguru is on the take, except that one softball review that I can't remember. Someone said he was employed by that PSU Mfg. and he still gave it a 6 or 7, but he softballed the conclusion.
Additionally, the Ultra is a tier 2 PSU, not too shabby aye?

You really can't go wrong with PSUs from Antec, Enermax, Seasonic, FSP, OCZ, or Silverstone all of whom make quality PSUs. I think sometimes people get to hung up on power numbers and not the quality of the unit. It's like cars or audio equipment not all 300hp engines are equal nor 100w receivers. In fact with audio, cheap receives are notorious for putting out outrageous power numbers and in fact don't produce anything near that in usable power, which is what is important
I am running that power supply now:
Q6600 @ 3.8Ghz, X38, 8800GTX, 2 HD, 2 DVD+RW, Water Cooling, 9 120mm fans, and have had zero power issues.
So far it is very stable, and provides all of the juice I can use.
Spot the idiot coming in who doesn't know what he's talking about. Hello we are talking about the X3 series not the X2 series!!
I have tried Ultra X2's and they are rubbish. I fiddled about in one to change the fans and it wouldn't work after this... Really bad build quality... Would advise everyone to avoid these like the plague!!
So I thought no more Ultra PSU's for me. But when I read a review of the Ultra X3... I need a PSU for a large external HD PC case (16xHD) and didn't need the MB cable (no motherboard). No problem just plug in a jumper header in the ATX connector port on an Ultra X3 1KW PSU and I had my powersupply!! It works a treat.
Everything about the Ultra X3 oozes quality. It has much better cooling (single large fan, large heatsink, air directed out the back) than the X2 series. The modular connectors and cable plugs are all gold plated in this series. The cabling is much better quality as well (really thick cabling for minimal resistance) and can be remodded since it uses standard cabling parts.
Read any review of the X3 Series and you see 1kW = 1kW, 1.6kW=1.6kW of real power for system!!
So to nman729 tri-SLI 8800 Ultra = maybe not!! But that PSU will take anything else you throw at it!! Certainly the low(ish) power of a 3870x2 GPU would barely load a 1KW Ultra X3!!
