SATA DVD Drive fails after being idle

Last response: in Storage

New system: Vista 64, LG SATA DVD burner. The DVD drive works fine unless the system is left idle for a long time (maybe an hour or more). Then it fails to respond when the system tries to read the DVD. The light merely blinks when I try to open the door. The device manager reports that all is well. I have to turn off the computer for it to work again.

Update: now the drive doesn't always come back after turning the computer on/off. This morning after booting the door refuses to open. The light just blinks. There are no warnings in the device manager and no events in the logs associated with this issue. When the drive responds it seems to work fine. Could it be an issue with the motherboard? DRM? Should I RMA this drive?
