I'm an engineer who uses SolidWorks at work and occasionally at home. I don't use it all that much on my home PC but do a lot more HiDef (1600x1200 on primary display and 1920x1080 on secondary (occasional)) photo and video display/editing.

I'm looking at the nVidia Quadro FX-570 (256MB) for my home PC because it has very good compatibility with SolidWorks. However, I don't use SW all that much on my home PC but much more frequently use it for HiDef (1600x1200 on primary display and 1920x1080 on occasional secondary display) photo and video editing.

Am I looking in the right direction?

As far as I know, photo and video editing do not take advantage of graphics cards. They use pure CPU power, and most higher-end (photoshop, premiere pro, etc) apps fully support quadcore processors.
