Ports(com lpt) missing from device manager

Hello,
I am having trouble with my ports(com lpt) on inspiron 6000 laptop. They are not showing in device manager dialog box.Are they represented differently? Every time i try to use it, it says thet are unavailable due to applications or hardware.
