Startup disk for toshiba satellite with Windows XP

I have a Toshiba Satellite M35X-S111. I used it Sunday night, on Monday, I turned it on and it opened to a black screen that said: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM.
It also said I can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup DC_ROM. I purchased this computer used from an individual and do not have the Setup CD.
What can I do?

  1. At POST there should be a recovery options choice, if memory serves. If not there then F8 at the second screen. The Satellites usually do not ship with an OS disk. The setup can be done by choosing the option that returns the system to factory specs. the recovery partition acts as the setup utility.

It's easier to connect the hard drive to another computer to recover from a corrupted registry.
