The volume check box for my volume on the task bar is grayed out

I lost the icon on my task bar for the volume control. I searched and found to go to the Control Panel and find the check box for the volume in the properties section.
The box is grayed out, so I can't check it. Any clues?

services.msc - Scroll down list and see if Windows Audio is set to automatic. Start if if not, and set it to Auto.
