hello all, had the bright idea of using older used components for my home server (i do want to build one, but not at an expensive pricetag) and had a couple questions...

1) will an old school amd 2100+ cpu work? i know its only at 1.76ghz or something, and has a TINY cache. but will it work? the 1.8ghz sempron they use in the hp version doenst seem to be too much better...

2) i will have a gig of ddr 400 running at ddr266...ouch. is that ok as long as its reliable?

3) this puppy runs hot due to 180nm tech...i mean it was hot at idle! 54c!! i gotta find a cheap wc kit, or use the old one i have for it.

4) do you think it is ok and good enough to use? or just spend the 350 bucks for new technology and know that my files arent going to be gone tomorrow!?!?!?!?!

Yes, your components are fine. Check out this article: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/27840/77/

As for the hot idle temps, perhaps your case airflow is lacking? I certainly wouldn't mess with water cooling on a server -- too many maintenance issues and possibilities for disaster.

ZOD - I suspect the OP doesn't have a socket AM2 MB, so modern cheap CPUs are out without a MB purchase.

Or, at least the way it was. The tiny little hsf you got with the chip is less than a quarter the weight of present hsf.
Get something that is rated for the xp3200, and your idle temps will be low 40s or below.

yeah, well it is a bigger hsf, about 60mm, but still sucktastic. no i am not going to blow 500 bucks on all that stuff, well, i am up to 463 with all new components, including a 60gig laptop drive for os, a 500gb green power caviar drive...whs os, a newer mobo, and a gig of pqi ddr2 667 ram, not really expensive, but the wife doesnt want me to buy three freakin case fans at 5.99 a pc. so, i am trying to just get like a fan and the whs, and use what i got. i think the watercooling wont be a deal, i had it on my system for over a year with no leaks or anything before. i think the crappy version of k7 will be fine then. thanks for the help and info guys!

wow, i read the parts list and seen what they used and i am impressed. i will not be using ubuntu or any cool os, since windows is what my wife is used to, plus samba and stuff to share and play nice with dual platforms is just another hassle. maybe when i have time on my next shore tour. my tour coming up is out to sea in san diego, not a lot of time to tool around, i will want as much time with my family as i can get. thanks again for the help guys!!!

well since system is shot, the laptop i sold is also shot (now i have worthless hp crap from zv5000series all over kitchen table) and have a left over 754 chip and a gig ram...should i get a $30 mobo and fan and use this clawhammer 3000+? it is a 1.8ghz chip, lil better than that old 2100+, and uses ddr better i think, not dual channel mode, but stil better than that 133mhz speed. what you say? yeah, neigh? it will end up costing like 56 bucks with shippin to hawaii.

You could lower the speed on that puppy for a server ... you don't need it running full tilt for that kind of application .. you want stability.

Round a gig ... better to up the fsb as high as possible to improve I/O intensive stuff .. .drop the multiplier.

Yeah ... a later model HSF is in order ... the copper centre or solid copper base units from the 3000+, 3200+ and 2800+ are better coolers ... or an old Volcano 7+ or 11+ ... can adjust the fan speed too.

A server needs to run cool and stable - the disks you put in it are the key then.

Suggest you try to get some decent case fans pushing the air from front to rear ... and over the disks if possible.

Stick a bare bones XP or linux install on it.

Start by dropping the multiplier and increasing the FSB and try to get a happy medium.

2100+ cpus do run a bit hot ... particularly the .18 u cpu's.

My dad's old system was a 2100+ Athlon XP. It ran at 57-60C most of the time (even with the HS cleaned) before I moved back home. The high temps were due to really bad airflow. I ended up taking the side panel off, and changed out the cooler a few years back.

It still runs, and idles 38C-40C and load is around 47C-50C depending on the ambient room temp. Id say it still would be a good enough home server.

yeah that board is shot. i cant get it to post or load anything now. i think i am going to get a 754 board for my 3000+ out of the laptop with a gig and whs to run, just have to get the wifey to say 'ok' and its done! maybe i should use my centurion5 for server, and get a new case for my norm pc. thinking bout this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811233002
maybe i can put the dual 120 rads for wc on the back?
