I want to get rid of my software firewalls and simply go with a hardware firewall but I want a router that allows you to customize many settings. Any suggestions for a cheap wireless router? I bought the WRT54G2 from linksys and it has sucked.

Are there any specific settings your looking to customize?

Most 'cheap' routers will have port forwarding, a single DMZ, virtual servers and access restrictions but thats it.

What didn't you like about the said Linksys?

Usually cheap and 'many customizable settings' don't go hand in hand.

Well right now I have an actiontec router/wireless gateway that seems to have more options than the Linksys. I might just stick with that then. I just want to have a safe network without a software firewall.

If you enable mac address filtering, WPA2 and enable the discard Ping from WAN you should be fine. That's the setup I'm running on and have yet to have any issues for the last nuber of years.
