Win xp - black screen with active cursor after windows logo -

after the windows logo shows up all i get is a black screen with the mouse pointer, i can move it around, ctl alt del wont work or shift 5 times just makes a noise doesn't show any other windows just stays like that black with the pointer

safe mode works i was able to run antivirus scan, and also fixed a lot of stuff , everything seems to be ok but when i restart on normal mode i still get the black screen. plz help

When you say you fixed a lot of stuff, I assume you know your way around the control panel

This sounds like your video drivers are corrupt.
Since you can get into safe mode, Un-Install your video card.
Re-start normally. Windows will find new hardware (the video card) and plug in the drivers, or will prompt you to install the drivers, so have the drivers handy. Perhaps this is a good time to get the latest drivers for your card for installation when Windows restarts.
