Keyboard not responding

I am trying to fix a friends laptop. It's a Dell XPS 15" laptop. It asks for administrator password as soon as the system boots. I enter the password and then Windows Vista starts to load but when it gets to the log on screen the keyboard and the trackpad do not work. So i cant enter the password to get into windows and the only thing you can do is hold down the power button until it shuts off.

Anyone have any ideas

I AM NOT TRYING TO BYPASS PASSWORDS I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHY THE KEYBOARD AND TRACKPAD DONT WORK ON THE LOGON SCREEN

i did try a usb keyboard that I know works in all the usb ports and had the same result. An no it was working just fine he said he shut it down one night a week ago. Tried to turn it on and thats when the problem started. I have tried started it in safe mode and get the same results. He also said that it never asked for the password before windows will even load before, that was the first time it ever happened
