I have two drives. both on the same ide cable. one is a 80 gig(op system, and a 250 gig. no os. My 80 gig is getting full so i want to swap it with my second drive. I formatted it. I unplugged the other drive so now it's only the 250 gig drive. tried to install vista. came to a blue screen with an error. tried to format it again and tried to install xp. no all i get is the words cannot locate or install op system. or something like that. is my drive fried. it worked yesterday and today it doesn't work.

What was the EXACT error message?
Was the OS you were trying to install a full version or an upgrade?

Is the 250 GB drive strapped for master? It needs to be.

The larger of the two drives were set as such. 80 gig was C: drive and the 250 gig was the E:drive. full version of vista was on the 80 gig. year later i wanted for the 250 gig drive to be the main so i formatted the e drive and then placed it on the end of the ide cable. it was the only drive connected. tried to install three different versions of windows xp xp pro and vista.

I just went out and bought a new 1.5 ter drive. works no prob

If you didn't change the jumper on the drive from slave to master, as suggested by Jim_L9, it won't work.
