Hello, long time reader, first time builder.

I am trying to put together a true budget PC for some family members.
They don't play games, but might some day.
Mostly used for Media Managment (music & pics) maybe video someday
AND Internet - some basic word and excel i'm sure.

We will be running Vista Ultimate b/c we got it free from microsoft
and Media Center is pretty cool

I have this so far, but I still need a Monitor and key board - which I can probably get for $150-$200

Please review and tell me:
*What am I missing?
* What can I change to make it cheaper?
* Please excuse my lack of education, but do I still need 3.5" drive to load the OS????? thats important!?

thats going to put you back $245 vs $437 for your goods.

You can get a 4500 and easily OC on air to 3ghz if its ever needed. They prolly wouldn't need it unless they started to game.So "if" they do want to game you can OC both ram and cpu and you'll be great.

500GB is a bit much.. I mean thats over 100 full DVDs worth of space. 250GB is more then enough space.. and if ever they should fill it up I would just suggest that delete "item x" that hasn't been touched in 8 months lol

If you really want to save some extra money, get your self a mobo with onboard video. Since it doesn't sound like they are going to play crysis any time soon, they should be more then happy with onboard video.

MSI P6NGM-FD LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 7100 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail $64

That mobo w/ onboard video puts you back $64 vs $193 for your board and 8600.
-------------------------------------------------------
Also, I haven't had the need to use a floppy in years but I always install one. They cost less then $5 lol Its truly useless and I don't plan on installing one on my next rig. But if you don't have a wireless network and your family wants to move small files from PC to PC, it might be a good option to have handy.
--------------------------------------------

The above items are cheap, but very good. Any laymen can OC these days and can really get a good bang for your buck. Im sure others can suggest better tech and these were all just on the fly items. If some one put more research into it im sure you could get better and cheaper.

Also I just want to say that I know what it is to build a PC for the family. You want to build them something you and they will be proud of and something that will take care of them. But if your family is anything like mine, the above items are perfect. My family checks email, plays flash games and downloads the odd MP3. Its very easy to go overkill for those simple tasks.

-cheers

that is not a buget build if it has a e6750. swap it out for a e2160 or amd 4000x2, both have more than enough power for what you want to do and are much cheaper

Here is another set-up a came up with, just utilizing rebates and combo packs to get price down, HOWEVER

I'm not sure how good this CPU or Motherboard is, suggestions?

DVD DRIVE: Sony NEC Optiarc 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA $29.99

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS (Perpendicular Recording Technology) 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

RAM: Patriot Extreme Performance 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model $35.00 Mail-in Rebate $104.99

CASE & PSU: RAIDMAX SMILODON ATX-612WBP Black SECC STEEL ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 500W Power Supply - Retail

MoBO: BIOSTAR GF7050V-M7 LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 7050 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard 5
CPU: Intel Pentium E2160 Allendale 1.8GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor

For the 3 piece combo Retail $204.97

Subtotal: $424.94 - $95 (Mail-in-rebates)
TOTAL $329.94 plus shipping

But is it any good?

I want to keep it inexpensive, but leave some room in case they get more savvy with computers for their media or any games.

then stick wih the original build, swap out the E6750 for something like an E8400 or E6550, and get a HD3850.. be more expensive, but for games, it'd be definitely worth it... not to mention it'll last longer.
