However if it's for a HTPC, pick up the 2600XT

Which is better 8600gtx or 2600xt?

Thanks

There is no 8600GTX. The 8600GTS is a bit better than the HD2600XT for most games, especially with FSAA. Priced the same I'd want the 8600GTS for gaming, but until recently the HD2600XT has been much cheaper and the better option IMO. Either is a good option if $100 is your max. Once you apprach $150 and up you can get twice the performance or more out of a HD3850, HD2900 pro, 8800GT, etc.

If you want NV and the 8800GT is too expensive:

Pauldh, I think you need to fix that.

Yep, I'll go with that. The 8600 series just doesn't cut it anymore and only ever did at lower res.

Hmm, price is so close I side toward the 8600GTS. But either would be fine for those prices. I think some games the HD2600XT will win, especially ones that tend to favor the Radeons or ones that eat up vram like crysis. http://www.legionhardware.com/docu [...] id=698&p=2

But more often than not the 8600GTS should beat the HD2600XT. And in games/resolutions where fsaa is playable, the 8600GTS lead would be bigger.

edit: just wanted to add. i have been pro HD2600XT and anti 8600GTS for a long time, but that was because pricing gap between the two was huge and alot bigger than the performance gap. But The 8600GTS price drop and $60-70 HD2600XT dissapearance has caused me to not think as highly of the HD2600XT (pci-e) anymore.

Not passive, but $70 shipped AR this is what makes the HD2600XT attractive. More bang for the buck IMO than the two you listed.

Edit: Hmm, nut then there is this 8600GTS for just a bit more.

OK and one more. GDDR4 HD2600XT with the Witcher game for $75 shipped AR:
