Hi everyone,

I'm using 2 hard drives. one is WD 640gb 7200 rpm 3.0gb/s, for the other one all i know is 80gb 5400rpm.. both are sata.

I'm not sure if i have to set any jumper setting.. (i'm sort of noob) but i just plugged in both of them.

In every our or so, I'm hearing noise from one of the hard drive.

Description of that sound: sound like when I turn on/off the computer.

It doesn't make any noise if i unplug one of the hard drive..

Is this normal?

I'll appreciate any input.
Thanks,
Pete

It plays music like windows startup or shutdown? just kidding. If you can determine which one makes the sound, you can run a non-destructive test on the drive to see if it passes the manufacturer's specs. Go to the manufacturer's website and download their bootable drive fitness test program. Just make sure you backup all data first!!!!

haha no. not the windows startup/updown.
I don't really care about the 80gb but I'm worried that it's my new hdd, 640gb.

I went to WD website and looks like this is the one i have to run: http://support.wdc.com/product/dow [...] =3&lang=en

I filled up 500gb already and I don't have anywhere to back up to.. =:::::(

the only way to tell which it is is by unplugging one of them to see if the noise still happens. and if it is the 640GB drive, back it up as soon as you can. any noises coming from a hard drive is not a good sign.

have you tried disabling power saving ( the turn off harddrive option specifically) and seeing if the noise stops.

the every hour or so sounds less like a bad drive and more like powersaving doing something goofy.

My HTPC in the house does this when we all go do bed, it currently has 2x 320GB WD SATA drives in it with Windows Vista RAID (I dont care) it will make a click noise like a powerdown about 2-3 times after we turn the TV off....

HTPC has 80GB for boot, 2x 320GB for recording.

I had what I though was a drive going bad for the longest time....clicking noises, stuttering, random lockups. I reinstalled everything onto a new drive just to be safe, but left the old drive in as a secondary. It still worked, it just made noise and was flakey acting at times, but I just left it hooked up. Soon after, my PSU died. New quality PSU installed, and guess what, now the drive works perfectly, been runing over 2 months now without a hiccup, and no more noise.

Old PSU -Raidmax Volcano 630 watt. (yeah, I know Raidmax's are junk)
New PSU -BFG 680 watt.
