Boot sector viruses aren't that common anymore, are you sure you have one?

I'm no expert on viruses, but I will try to give you some options.

Boot sector viruses can just infect the boot sector, but they can also relocate the boot sector, which includes the partition table, and by repairing the MBR you could no longer be pointed to the new location of the partition table making it hard to recover your data. Before you do anything you should put the drive in as a slave or a USB external and save all data that you need, because it may not be easily accessible when you are done.

After you save your data, Set the XP CD to boot in the BIOS. Boot into the Recovery Console and type fixmbr at the prompt.

If this doesn't work, then download Ultimate Boot CD and run Active@ kill disk. You will need to burn the ISO to CD with ISO Recorder or other ISO burning software.

This will zero write the drive and then you can reinstall XP with confidence that the virus is gone.
