Ummmmm, you do realize that's a 5XXX series Xeon chip (Socket 771), not a desktop chip?

Can we take a guess that a quad version of this chip will be >2000? and its expensive even though its a workstation proc. But newegg lists it as a wolfdale.

The first iteration of a new generation processor is always expensive. Anyone remember the day of 500 USD for an E6700, or 350USD for an E6600? Now they're both in the 200 ranges.

I'm sure those 1200 USD Xeon dual core will drop to 800USD soon enough, and if AMD is just a little more competitive than it is now... :sarcastic:

The Socket 771 Xeon 5XXX and 7XXX series carry huge premiums, as do the top-end Opterons like the 8220:

Intel didn't make a distinction between the desktop and server versions of the chips as they are the same die, so they get the same basic code name. I think the Xeon version is technically "Wolfdale-DP" but who's counting?

Also if you read carefully that's a X5272 and that "X" prefix leads me to believe it's an extreme edition... What do you expect for the extreme editions? They are ALWAYS above $1000 these days.

The first letter in Intel's Core/Core2 naming scheme is usually for TDP. An exception is the Core 2 Quad, which has a "Q" for "quad-core." An "X" is for a TDP >65 watts in a dual-core and >80 watts in a quad-core. Here's a list of non-Extreme-Edition chips with that X:

Socket 775 Xeon quad-core "Kentsfield"
X3210 2.13 GHz, 95/105 W
X3220 2.40 GHz, 95/105 W
X3230 2.67 GHz, 95 W

Socket 771 Xeon quad-core "Clovertown"
X5355 2.67 GHz, 120 W
X5365 3.00 GHz, 120/150W

Socket 771 Xeon quad-core "Harpertown"
X5450 3.00 GHz/1333 MHz FSB, 120W (note there is an E5450 with an 80 W TDP but has a list price $64 higher...)
X5460 3.17 GHz/1333 MHz FSB, 120 W
X5472 3.00 GHz/1600 MHz FSB, 120 W (also, there is an E5472 with an 80 W TDP that is more expensive.)
X5482 3.20 GHz/1600 MHz FSB, 150 W

Socket 604 Xeon MP quad-core "Tigerton"
X7350 2.93 GHz, 130 W TDP

Why workstation? Are you specifically looking for a workstation CPU running at 3.4Ghz?

I may be showing my age here, but everything is a lot cheaper than it was just 2 years ago (pre-core), then the prices were perhaps twice what they currently are.
