whats up I love coming to these forums because there are alot of sharp minds here;with that being said i have a question about power supplies. I have not built a system since ATI released X800 cards so its been about 3 years and with that card i only really needed about 550Watts of power. I am in the process of purchasing parts to built for my new rig I plan on going with the

wolfdale E8500 OC'ed to 4.25
thermal right IFX 14 (with a 140 mm fan)
EVGA 132-CK-NF78-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
CORSAIR XMS2 DHX 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail 4-4-4-12 timing (buying 2 sets, so 8 gigs)
say 750G hdd 7.2k
(when it comes out) nvidia 9800 Gx2 vid card
2 extra 120MM red LED fans

What kind of power supply would i need for this (can you link some if possible)?

Also does anyone see any holes in my build or something i might/should get over something else any other suggestions?
any replies would be be great thanks!

Anything around the 850-1000w mark from the likes of silverstone, pcpower&cooling, coolermaster or antec will fit the bill.

Possibly you should look at getting a soundcard for that system?

OK, why are you getting a 780i motherboard, are you interested in SLI or Triple-SLI? That is, will you add a second video card, maybe also a third? You have to decide this first before you know what kind of PSU to buy.

By the way, if you intend to add 1 or 2 more cards later you might prefer the 9800GTX. Too early to tell, the cards haven't been released, and the drivers haven't been written and tested yet. Just because the 7950GX2 had issues with SLI doesn't mean the 9800GX2 will have them too.

For a single video card, something like this should be OK:

or a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610W.

For two cards, I'd pick a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W or a Toughpower 850W.

For three cards, Enermax Galaxy 1000W. There are cheaper PSUs that can do the job, but this is a good fit for a setup with $2000 worth of video cards.

I would like to keep my options open for SLI but for know single card.

would something like a 750 be too much if i plan on adding a few LED Lights (2 12 inch cathode 1 led lazer 3 set) mostly from Xoxide for those

I agree with Aevm that either a PC P&C 750 or a Thermaltake Toughpower 850 would be good PSUs for your proposed system.

But why the 780i? Or is it simply because you want to use multiple Nvidia cards? The X38/48 is a better board, though it is restricted to ATI cards if you're running more than one card.

As to adding lights, they take very little power, so a 750-850wt PSU would do fine, as well as allowing for two video cards.

thank you for all the replies. What is wrong with the 780i board? Soon as i get the system built i am going to just place the 1 card in there and maybe a few months down the line another. Would there be a better mobo for that purpose?

No, you're fine. That's exactly the motherboard I'd pick myself these days to use with two nVidia cards.
