This will be my first build - it is a quad-core system for video capture/editing/encoding (and DVD archiving). It will be used for little to no gaming (no modern/new games). Budget is $6-$700.

Q6600
GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX ATX12V V2.2 450W Power Supply
SAPPHIRE 100172-64L Radeon X1550 256MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card
a 160GB SATA 3.0Gb/s 7200 RPM HD (haven't chosen a specific drive)
a DVD Burner (haven't chosen a specific drive)
Rosewill R230-P-BK Black 0.5mm SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Case

The case was just something I chose from the $10-$25 category off newegg that had good reviews. I'm just looking for something that gets the job done - any reason the case wouldn't be good enough?

Also, I'll be putting in an ATI Wonder 550 PCI card for capturing and a Holo3Dgraph, which is a PCI video processing card that requires a molex connector to run (don't know the power draw, but my current Pentium 4 system with a 300W PSU, a Radeon 8500 and 4 other PCI cards with this card is running fine)..

don't need massive HD storage.

any advice appreciated.

The list looks good. Get a Corsair 450w or Earthwatts 430W so it won't be outdated come the next upgrade.

Unfortunately newegg is out of stock, but try to nab one of these instead.

Now these will probably not be good at all for gaming compared to a x1550. I tried to compare the two via benchmarks but there are none on the net comparing the two, I just used the VGA charts and ran a 2400 pro (similar) and a x1600...and the x1600 is indeed better. Why am I recommending it? A superior UVD...Great for decoding 1080p mkv/mp4's...Overall a good buy. But it all depends on if you want it or not. Considering gaming is worse on it, it might not be the best choice. But I'll leave that up to you.

Regarding the case, it should be fine, but whatever you get, try to make sure it has a few ventilation fans to keep everything cool. Also note, that cheap cases tend to be VERY sharp, be very careful when you put the sucker together not to cut your hands on sharp edges.

get a case with a MoBo tray.

I'd suggest 4gigs of ram (2x2) and a 64bit OS. its cheap and its the future.

you might want to pick up a 2nd HDD and set up a raid 1 for data security

or try for phenom... the mobos and chip are pretty cheap, and the TLB bug isn't really that big a deal unless you use virtualisation or overclock...
