gaming rig help

so i am new to building computers and i feel like if i get the parts i could build one myself with a few friends help and online sources, so i have around 1700 dollars or maybe a little less and i want to build a gaming computer i have a 22 inch lcd monitor as well, if anyone has suggestions on a particular setup or advice anything would be appreciated thanks

$600 computer $950 monitor. Gonna drop in a Yorkie and a 3870, 8800gt soon.
