old ide hdd died and now trying to install sata2 hdd. when loading windows xp it won't recognise hdd. anyone help with the problem

You have to hit "F6" when prompted during the install (Do you need to install a 3rd party Device Driver) and supply Windows with SATA driver. XP does not contain the drivers for SATA controllers. Your motherboard disk should have the drivers on it, you will need to copy them to a floppy drive, or USB drive and point Windows to them when it asks you later in the install to supply the disk with the drivers.
Or, you can enter the BIOS and set the SATA controller to Native, or Emulated IDE mode. You won't get some of features you would have using AHCI mode though, like hot swap ability, and Command Queing, But unless you are an advanced user, change drives around a lot, you won't notice any difference in the 2 modes. But then XP can see the drive without having to install the SATA driver.

FYI, whatever mode you select, you won't be able to change it once you install XP. So if you feel you really want to run in AHCI, you have to install Windows under that mode. You cannot change it later, Windows will simply blue screen at boot.
