From 8800GTS 320MB to new 8800 512MB GTS

I just changed from an EVGA 8800GTS 320MB Superclocked card to a BFG 8800GTS 512MB OC.

I am using a:
Q6600 @ 3.2, 4GB PC800 @ 800, 1600FSB.
Gigabyte P35C-DS3R motherboard
2 x 320GB 7200.10 Seagate in RAID 0
Vista Home Premium, 64-bit

Just in case someone has been considering an upgrade like this, I just wanted to post my experience.

I have noticed a considerable boost in performance and useability in some games. I used to be only able to run Crysis @ 1280x1024 on all Medium. Now 1920x1080 on all High + Very High Shaders is very playable.

Dark Messiah was playable up to 1680x1050, max settings, 2X AA/16AF. Now 1920x1050 @ 4X is very smooth.

Splinter Cell Double Agent was only playable up to 1280, now 1920 is very smooth.

Call of Duty 4 and Gears of War were already decent @ 1920, max settings and 2X AA with the 320MB. I will check to see if I can go higher now with AA.

More info to come :)

Yeah, I went from one 8800GTS 320MB to dual 8800GT and the difference is huge. Crysis and even Oblivion were night and day. Anyway, enjoy the new card.

Can you run AA in Crysis with SLI?

Not quite playable with the single card I'm using now. It it allows AA to be turned on I might get another and switch boards.

Thanks :)

I run 1680x1050 all high 2xaa/16xaf just fine in Win XP 32-bit. But, 4xaa/16xaf I feel I am running out of vram as framerates are often quite good and then other areas get so very choppy. I played quite a bit at 4xaa, but when I hit the assault level, I couldn't take the chop and backed it down to 2xaa from then on out. I'd really like to see 1GB 8800GT SLI vs 512MB GT SLI results for crysis with 4xaa to see if it truely is in need of more than 512MB vram.

BTW, at 2x/16x SLI gives me a 55% improvement in performance over a single card. Pretty massive difference IMO.

pauldh, how is performance on the snow level? I have the same card as the thread hoster and run a mixture of high and very high at 1680x1050 and it is great on first level but if I play the snowy one at all I have to crank things down pretty drastically.

Paradise lost was smooth and had huge gains with sli. Much smoother than assault was. I didn't have to reduce settings at all for that one (although I had already dropped from 4xaa to 2xaa for assault) At 16x10 all high 2xaa/16xaf one card sat between 15-20 fps and felt laggy in that level, but two cards were 27-38 and very playable. I won't slow this thread down with images, but links are below if you want to see them. The only direct comparison is the second single screenie vs 2nd sli screenie as they are both at a load point without moving. Notice 16 fps for the single card, and 29 fps for the two cards. That's an 81% sli scaling increase in that screenie.

Edit: put in some more screenies, and also wanted to mention I never tested this without fsaa to see how good a single 8800GT does. 2xaa may have hurt single card performance quite a bit, I'll have to see how playable this level is without fsaa on one card.
