I know that someone else had asked this type of question just today or yesterday, but I have a different track.

I have a dead HD... will not recognise in BIOS and won't even spin! I think it was shocked or something when I was putting together my new build. I was really careful with it and even wore the cheesy, nerdy grounding strap, so no static issues happened.

My question is this: what am I looking at having to pay someone to get these files off this drive?

The freezer trick sounds like it's for someone who's HD is spinning, but not for long, as it's to compensate for the motor overheating.

I've tried this thing in 3 machines and now it won't work at all, so I guess that it's off to the professionals.

It's expensive!!

There's a local shop in my area that I asked a similar question a few months ago. They were going to charge around $700. The data wasn't worth that much to me.

+1 for it being EXPENSIVE!

you really have to decide if the data is worth that much to you. unless it's secure data, or extremely important work-related data, most people just take it as a lesson learned, and let go of any files, music, or pictures they've lost.

If the HD is still under warranty, you may be able to get the manufacturer to pay the cost of the data recovery.
