I've only seen one passively cooled 8800gt out there and it still costs a fortune. How soon do the fanless cards usually come out after the normal release of a card? I wonder if we'll even see these.

A silent PC is a must, I sit by my computer all day. I have a silent 7600gt now, and I plugged in another 7600gt (with fan) for SLI and I couldn't stand the noise after a couple days, I had to take it out.

Honestly, many actively cooled cards are basically silent at idle, just ramp up during gaming. You could take any reference 8800GT and at 29% noise is not an issue. But in games it will be louder, or very loud if you OC and manually set the fan to 80-100 % RPM.

Oh, and the 7600GT with constant 100% fan is a terribly loud card. You want a card that is passively cooled, varies rpm on it's own, or uses an exotic cooler.

You can just use a high end aftermarket cooler and a silent fan, 15dba if you wanted.

You wont hear it at all. 15dba is inaudible.

If the newer cards are really silent while not gaming, that would be ideal! I assumed the fans were on all the time, since that's been my epxerience.

While I'm gaming I don't care, the sounds of the game covers the fan noise.

How do I figure out which cards are quiet while doing desktop work? Is there a way to configure the fan speed with software, or with a dial external to the case maybe?

u can use rivatuner. to control fan speeds.

Ok, this is sweet, I didn't even know you could do this. I can stick one of these on my loud 7600gt and go back to SLI for a while, until the 8800gt gets cheaper. Then I'll just put the fan on it.

Can anybody recommend one of the Zalman VF-700 vs. VF-900, or another brand?

I put Zalman VF-900 CU's on my 8800GT's and love them. You may want to just go with soemthing cheaper for the 7600GT, like this one:
