Overclocking help needed for Q6600 + MSI Neo-F V2

Hello everyone =) This is my 1st post here as you can see!! ^.^

Anyways, i got a little bit of a problem, i bought a Q6600 about 6 months back, using it on some low-spec motherboard, my specs were -

CPU - Intel Core2Quad - Q6600 (Stock Speed + Stock HSF) - G0 Stepping
Mobo - Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2
PSU - Hiper Type-M 580w
RAM - 4.00GB (2x2gb Corsair) PC2-5300 - Dual Channel
Sound Card - Creative X-Fi Music (PCI-E)
HDD - 2 x 250GB Seagate Barracuda SATA2
Graphics - Inno3d GeForce 8800GT 512mb (Overclocked Edition)
OS - Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit Edition)

I didnt DARE overclock the CPU because of the mobo and cooling, so after 4 months i did a little upgrade =)

My new spec -

CPU - Intel Core2Quad - Q6600 (Stock Speed + Arctic Cooling Feezer 7 Pro + Arctic Cooling XMS2) - G0 Stepping
Mobo - MSI Neo-F V2 LGA775 Motherboard (P965)
PSU - Corsair TX-Series 750w PSU
RAM - 8.00GB (2x2gb Corsair PC2-5300) + (2x2gb ADATA PC2-5300) - All running at 667Mhz Dual-Channel
Sound Card - Asus Xonar DX
HDD - 2 x 250GB Seagate Barracuda SATA2, 1 x 500GB Seagate Barracuda SATA2
Graphics - Leadtek GeForce 9800GTX 512mb
OS - Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit Edition)

I managed to overclock my GF 9800GTX from

GPU Clock: 675Mhz
Memory Clock: 1100Mhz
Shader Clock: 1688Mhz

GPU Clock: 787Mhz
Memory Clock: 1201Mhz
Shader Clock: 1968Mhz

BTW i used RivaTuner to overclock this.

(Im more than happy with these GPU clocks, when i think about people getting 800Mhz-850Mhz overclocks on core, i remember that every card is different, so maybe this is my card's limit!! - Without artifacting etc).

I then thought about overclocking via the bios!! I tried upping the PCI-E Bus speed, but that failed miserably, all i got was the Graphics Card Error tones from the onboard speaker, i then did a CMOS reset, that worked ok, booted up the PC and everything was fine!! So i then went back to the bios and tried upping my CPU/RAM speeds..

Weirdly i cant get past 2.56Ghz on my Core 2 Quad - Q6600 (G0 stepping) without problems..

CPU-Z shows -

And for RAM -

RAM speed - 700Mhz..

Everytime i try to 'up' anything, i keep getting BSoD or crashing.. *confuzzled* Please help!!

Almost forgot, my temps!! -

If there's any further information i could provide, please feel free to ask =)

Cheers every1!!

More about overclocking needed q6600
  1. Stupid me!! RAM Speed - 710Mhz. (Cant edit post for some reason)!!
  2. *bump* could someone please help?
  3. Your vcore is way too low. Try upping it to 1.35v or 1.3v. Just remember that this will effect your temps greatly so watch those carefully. Not sure how far you will get with that cooler though. It is a great low noise and cost effective hsfu, but it really can't handle quad heat loads. Also, P965 defaults ram voltage to 1.8v which is pretty low. I would also recommend upping that to manufacturer specifications.
  4. Hi, i took your advice and upped my vcore to roughly 1.31v and my ram to 2.20v ... This gave me a maximum stable overclock to 2.59Ghz (0.04Ghz extra).. What could be causing this? :O Im so confused... Ive taken some time and money to invest into some new CPU cooling (Ultra-120 Extreme) with a 120mm PWM fan attached to it!! Temps are much lower, but still no difference in overclocking..

Thanks for the help so far!!
  5. you never overclock PCI-E!it will ruin your graphics card and corrupt your HDD.

lower the memory multipier to 1:1 or 2.0 which ever one state in your BIOS.

post whats your setting in the Cell menu in BIOS.speed, volts, timing and so on then i can help you.
  6. Hi, sorry for the late reply, had a little problem with my net!!

Well here is a picture of my Cell_Menu on my bios!! -

    Hope this helps =)

    Thanks very much!!

Btw, my dad's a graphics designer, he upgraded his PC and gave me his 6 month old CPU (Its a Q6700), is there any point in upgrading it? Or should i keep my Q6600 and sell the Q6700...

  7. Eeek, i thought it would resize, sorry about the huge picture!!!
  8. I think the Q6700 will be easier to OC since it has a 10x multi instead of 9x on the Q6600, although the G0 OC quite well. It would be a better investment (OCing wise) to buy a better mobo. MSI doesn't make very good OCing mobos.
  9. Hmm, well i apparently i broke my Q6600 + MSI motherboard!! Well my Q6600 doesnt have warranty.. ah well, i got a Q6700 now xP and i RMA'd my MSI motherboard, they want 2 months for replace/repair!!! :o So i thought.. ok il buy a different one and sell that on ebay whn i get it back :P So i bought a ASUS P5Q Pro (P45) motherboard, which i got today.. Chose it after seeing a good few reviews about it on the net.. And was within my budget. So il try it out this evening =) Hopefully it'll overclock better than my MSI!!

    Cheers every1 =)
  10. Ahh, good choice. I was thinking about buying that board but decided I need food more :P. I hope you like that board.
