installing e8400 into evga 780i

it seems that when i go to lock it, the e8400 is sitting up and after further inspection there are pins where the e8400 is supposed to fit and there are no holes in the 8400 for the pins to go into, what shall i do?

sure it's not just turned the wrong way? It should fit fine, otherwise your motherboard is defective.

Is there a protective cover on the e8400

Allign the arrows on the cpu and the motherboard. I assembled the same combination last week with no problem.
