Hi guys, I'm new here but been reading the forums for a while.

It's coming up to my birthday soon (less than a month), and I need a new PC. My budget is about £400, maybe £450 max. if it's worth it.

I've looked at a few builds, and decided (as the main part) I want an E2160, on a Gigabyte P35-DS3L. Using the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7, I hope to get up to 3ghz, maybe over. I won't be too bothered though if I don't hit that speed, as long as it's stable. I've OCed before, and read enough threads specifically about the C2Ds so I think I'll be fine doing it. For my budget, do you think it's worth the step up to, say, an E4500?

The main dilemma of my system, however, is the graphics card. The system's mainly going to be for gaming (CoD4 and a few of the new-ish games, not Crysis though), and listening to my music. I've got all the music on a 200GB HD already, so I basically only need a Windows drive.

Anyway, graphics. I've been looking at the 8800GS, 8800GT, 3850 and 3870XT. They're all (near enough) around the same price range.

The only 8800GT really in my price range is the 256mb. It's £125 here - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=733162

However, there's an 8800GS for slightly cheaper, £115 - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=752310

The thing is, the 8800GS has a 192-bit interface, and 384MB ram. The 8800GT has a 256-bit one, but only 256MB of ram. Which one of these, do you think, would be best for me? I don't game at high resolutions, the max my monitor goes is 1400x1050. I just wonder whether the lack of memory on the GT would slow it down a lot, even though it's got a better interface. I've seen a few benchmarks, but any help on this would be great, as most of the benchmarks were for the 512 8800GT.

While I've been writing this post, I've counted out the 3850. Seen this 3870 for £130 - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=707460

Would the 3870 (512mb) be even better than the 8800GT or GS? Looks a pretty fast card.

Or, should I just save up a bit more (£152) and get a 512MB GT?

^ that's the rest of my build, with the 256MB 8800GT in there to give you an idea of the price. Any suggestions would be great, as obviously I wanna get my money's worth. Thanks for your time, and sorry for the rather large post.

:) glad to help ya out, m8...

get the GT if you can afford it - it'll be the best of the lot... IMO, the 256 GT gets smoked by the 3850 price/performance-wise, and the GS, again, IMO is nothing but a poorly crippled gt ripof... now, i say that, because i have never read anything to conpel me that the card is nothing more than yet another attempt by nvidia to counter the 3850...

i say this, as i was in the same situation as you... if you can get the GT, then do... but the 3870 won't be a bad buy either...

oh, try ebuyer ^^ they have an OCed 3850 for like, 110 ^^

The gpu issue is addressed. Let me talk about cpus.

Now see the current 65nm dual cores max out at around 3.6ghz on air. You can buy an extreme with unlocked multiplier that hits 3.6 for over $1000 US or you can pick up a $100 Allendale for about the same overclock. With Freezer, 3ghz is a given.

The 45nm is def. worth the money if you overclock it to 4ghz or higher.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll definately try and stretch my budget for the 8800GT, but I don't think I can stretch to a wolfdale. It's like £120 for an e8200 over here, whereas the e2160 is like £45.
