Can CPU VID change?

Forum Overclocking : CPUs Can CPU VID change?

I swear when I first ran coretemp, it showed VID on my E8400 as 1.15V. Then, I overclocked it and now it's been showing VID as 1.225V ever since. But, I thought a CPU's VID was permanent. Could this actually have changed, or maybe there was some kind of glitch and 1.15V was false to begin with? Can anyone tell me? FYI, it's right now running at 3.4 Ghz (400FSB x 8.5) stable at 1.216V (per CPU-Z, I forgot what I actually set it on BIOS and too lazy to look it up).

No it can't change. You can change current vcore, but not rated VID.

VID cant be changed its physically "program" onto the CPU die and its set to give instruction to the BIOS on how much Vcore to give to the CPU at different state.

and dagger!whats that "-1" on your reply?LOL

The last time I ran coretemp with C1E and speedstep enabled the VID would fluctuate between 1.35V and 1.15V when it lowered the multi. This also only happened when cpu voltage was set to [Normal] in BIOS.

So...basically what iluvgillgill said. :D

Isn't that just coretemp giving faulty readings? :p

No. I don't think so. The CPU has at least two VID states.

Check the third post in this thread http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1263928.

so with C1E+Speedstep/Enhance State disable it should give the "REAL" VID of the CPU at stock speed. i think thats the better way to put it.

Reply to iluvgillgill

The other VID is no less "real" though. Your point about the stock speed/voltage is good though.

I would think VIDmax if necessary would work. Wonder if there is any correlation between VIDmin and overclocking, or perhaps undervolting? :sol:

Will this be a good build to overclock 2500k to 5.0GHz?
