Could someone give me an example of a PSU that could power a Q6600 (G0), 4 HDDs, 1 DVD writer, 4 fans, and in the future an ATI 4870 .This means that it should have at least 4 SATA cables and an 8 pin power connector for the video card (I guess). The CPU is mildy OC-ed to 3 GHz.

4870?
Look at you planning ahead!

I agree with Paul, any high quality unit from 500W should be fine, although we don't actually know the power requirements for the 4xxx series yet.

Would a Thermaltake Toughpower 600W be enough? It has 4 12V rails each putting 18A. I wanted to buy that PSU but I saw it supported only dual cores so I chickened out :P. Also, whats the deal with the amperage on rails: if I have a PSU with more rails of 18 A for example and a video card needs 24A would the amparage from 2 rails add to power that video card ? Should I consider a single rail PSU?

The Corsair HX520 is modular, the VX550 isn't. They're both good deals here;

The PC P&C Silencer 610w or 750w are the best 600-800w power supplies on the market. They have all the connections you could possibly want, and are very reliable. Pick these the 750w Silencer was the PSU in Nvidia's first showing of the 8800 Ultra in a system.

Both the PCP&C 750 and the Corsair HX520 are made by Seasonic. Both are quality units and should be enough for your system.
