I am looking at purchasing my new build next month and still planing it out.

My plan is to use the q9450 with the p5e deluxe mobo. i was going to overclock the cpu but not sure how high and wondering if i need a better mobo with high overclocks around 3.5-4.0ghz water cooled of course. if i overlclocked this high should i order an attachment for my northbus on the water cooler? would i need realy fast memory or will 1066 be enough to keep up with the cpu?
I am a newb with overclocking and still building on computer knowhow
in adition non related to overlocking im not sure how much power i need here is my set up thus far

mobo p5e deluxe
cpu q9450 oc 3.8 ghz
ram 8 gig corsair dominator 1066mhz
harddrive 5 Seagate barracudas raid 0
videocards 2 4870x2 crossfire

if you're new to overclocking, i suggest you take your comp to the reasonable 3.2ghz for the Q9450

3.4ghz is attainable as well..3.6ghz is harder, and 3.8ghz is really pushing it

there's a lot of voltages to be managed when you're taking a quad up to 3.8ghz and A LOT of priming, try 3.2ghz first and work your way up from there

and the 45nm's voltages can't be as high as the 65nm's
the range is 0.85V–1.3625V for the Q9450

for the ram part: 1066mhz is fine for a 3.8ghz OC

and personally, i would use the ASUS Maximus II Formula

it is considered by many to be an OC-ing champ. it was used in the recent OC-ing contest here on toms i believe

Nice board but i dont think that chipset will run my crossfire at full speed. how high has anyone gotten a 45nm cpu?

As far as i see all of intels cpus are 45 i dont see why i would be able to overclock to 4ghz

If you get the Q9450 to 3.6 (with safe voltages) then that's pretty good. Any higher will require more voltages, especially at the FSB (VTT). I'm maxed on my setting and I don't have anything to read the current, but supposedly you don't want to go too far here. If you search around, the limit is around 450 FSB on these Q9450.

With 8 gigs of ram, you will probably have trouble any higher than 3.6 imo. There are timing problems with increased ram, especially if you are using all 4 slots. I have a maximus 2 and i get 3.7 on air, with a crappy VID of 1.25.

For the Xfire question, take a look at this http://www.tomshardware.com/review [...] 15-9.html. Its a little old, but not much has changed. Its up to you if you think the slightly extra cost matters or not.
