I preordered a Q9450 from buy.com yesterday. Got a $10 off coupon for being a new customer, plus free shipping. Good times. Hope I don't have to wait too long...

Let's hope all those X48 boards jump out of the gate this week also. Hopefully in time for people to review with the quads before the immediate chip supply dries up. (My eyes are on the Rampage Formula at the moment.)

Its too bad that most of the x48 boards are DDR3. I hope Asus comes out with a good X48 board thats DDR2 thats similar to the maximus formula.

Rampage Formula is supposed to be just that. That's what I'll probably pair with my Q9450, but I may yet get the Striker II, as I only intend to overclock lightly, like to 3.0 or 3.2.

The Q9550 looks good to me, though the Q9650 would be a little better for overclocking. All depends on the final price, of course. That, with a X48 board should do well for a long time. Just wish DDR3 ram would come down a bit in price. As it is, I'll probably end up with a DDR2 board and get a lot more ram for a lot less money.

That's right. And the 8.5 multiplier means that its a bit easier to get a higher clock, needing a FSB of 447 to get 3.8ghz, while a 8.0 multiplier needs a FSB of 475. That's nearly 30 points lower, and all that much easier to achieve. Of course, the Q9650, running a 9 multiplier needs a FSB of only 422 for the 3.8ghz clock, so is easier yet. Its all in the pricing as to which CPU to buy, and of course, how high an overclock you want.

exactly why im going with the Q9550 i saw on a site where they tested the Q9550 and overclocked it to 3.6ghz on stock heatsink and fan that comes packaged with it. It looks like its going to be a really good chip for overclocking. probably could have even been pushed higher.

I believe he was refering to the none extreme version because there was no X in Q9650. You have to love the Xtreme versions though that unlocked multiplier = :bounce:

I definitely agree with you Sailer. The most expensive CPU I've ever bought was my old A64 3800+ for $373. My FX-60 (another overpriced "extreme" CPU) was bought long after they were obsolete and dirt cheap to replace the 3800.

I bought a FX60 myself, after the prices dropped way down. I gave the computer that used it to my son when his old computer failed a few months ago. That was a good chip in its time, but long obsolete now.

In my opinion a Q9550 is ridiculiously expensive and the Q9450 is the only choice, I have read great stuff about this and CPU and will hold off to buy one, I have just ordered everything of my new system except the motherboard/cpu which I am holding off for Asus Rampage x48 DDR2 and this Q9450.

I think DDR3 is pointless right now, seen many benchmarks comparing DDR2 800 to DDR3 1333 giving only a 1% increase in performance 2% with the best CPU's, in other words no real world difference right now.

I will hold off for when they become cheaper and worth it, only upgrade I plan to get in the next 3 years is a new graphics card, everything in my system is new except I am keeping my current Graphics card (BFG Ge Force 8800GT 512MB).

I wish these would come out, half of me thinks if I buy a 6600 and a sus maximus formula x38 I could build it all tommorow but I know if I do that, they will come out the next day or something.

I am going to use a Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120 for cooling and go for a 3.2ghz without thinking and then 3.4 and 3.6ghz if it can do it.
