Ok i been thinking and fiddling with OCing my Q6600 if i even OC it slightly like to 2.6ghz my temp goes to 69 degrees... i have the standard cooler that came with it gonna get a aftermarket cooler later on if its really necessary.

I dont have the best MoBo a G31-sl2 if any1 can give me some advise on how to OC and as to y my temp gets so high.. at stock it idles at 42 gets to mid 50's under load depending on room temp. but a 200mhz OC and it idles at 55+- and hits 69+- under load.

so what i really wanna know is how can i OC with that MoBo and if there anyway to keep the temp a little cooler without getting an after market cooler?
also is it worth OCing my cpu for gaming? will i see a big diff in performance?

Full system spec if needed:

Q6600 @ 2.4ghz
G31-s2l MoBo
Ezcool 1200watt psu
HD4870x2 GPU
4GB ddr2 800 (5-5-5-15)
raidmax Aztec case

Thank u in advance for any help u may provide :D

the Q6600 can do 3Ghz on stock cooling but you need to turn the fanspeed control off to get that temp. and make sure you select vcore voltage to VID value which displays in the program called Coretemp. turn EIST,C1E,Enhance state off from the BIOS.

69 degrees sounds hot, are you living in a warm climate? Also, you might want to look into a better cooling unit such as a Xigmatek S-1264 or OCZ Vendetta. They are relatively inexpensive and will help out alot with cooling. Plus a good heat compound like Arctic Silver. What kind of case do you have, do you have sufficient air circulation, this will help out immensely too.

Right now, i've got my Q6600 running pretty stable at 3.0Ghz on an MSI P6N MB and my temps are 35-40C idle and 45-50C load. I'm running an OCZ Vendetta for cooling, and i've got 2 case fans in the front blowing in and 2 in the back and 1 on the side blowing out. I've also got a full-size tower as well which helps out further with circulation.
