Hi,

Am about to get a new system, and have two mates who will be getting exactly the same.

So far the list reads:

Q6600
ASUS P5K Deluxe
8GB of Corsair 2048MB TwinX XMS2 6400 C4 DDR2 4-4-4-12 800Mhz
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
Xilence 750W Modular Quiet Gaming Edition PSU with 135mm fan

2xWestern Digital 150GB Raptor X SATA Hard Disk Drive 10K rpm 16MB
Setup in RAID 0 for both OS and Apps

I am after great performance and will be looking to O/C to hopefully 3.4.
Games will be played but I am after the best I get can for things like Video editing, PS and now LightRoom; so if there are any improvements I would be glad to see 'em.

Thanks for reading,
Simon.

Will you be purchasing a graphics card?

Looks like a great build.

Opps, I already have a 8800 GTX XXX.

I want to stick with Intel chipset hence not going for SLI

No need for RAID, just get a single larger capacity drive. If one drive dies, all of your data is gone.

------------------------------ Intel qx9650 @3.81GHz (10x multi) + EVGA 780i SLI mobo @381MHz FSB
2x EVGA 8800GT 512mb OC'd, OCZ DDR2 1066MHz 4gb
OCZ 850W PSU, Seagate 750GB HDD SATA 32mb cache CM Stacker 830 SE
Sound setup: FireFace 800, JBL 4328 speakers

Raptors are not cost effective price/performance wise. grab a SpinPoint T 500GB or one of the good seagates; i can't remember which

All my data is stored on a separate NAS.
If I lose one of the disks it isnt a problem, I just want speed :)

What about cooling the Baby before you can even think of getting a 3.4 GHz OC?

I am planning on using the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro for the CPU and chucking in 120mm fans as needed.

Thanks for all the responses, looks like its time to get ordering :)

qhat i was saying is that the drive i mentioned has a seek time that's points of a milisecond slower than the raptor... saw a chart somewhere... anyway, you should seriously consider it

okay, thanks. Didnt realize they were so close. Will investigate more.

I did like the idea of a SAS Raid 0 setup but couldnt get any ideas of the performance improvement over SATA for all that extra £££.

This is very similar to my setup and I've been happy with mine. I assume you're planning to run Vista64 or XP64 to take advantage of the 8gb of RAM? What case will you be using?

I've been a use of XP64 since it was released and love it.
As for case, I am torn between these two:

I have also mad(e) a brave decision. My OS disk is going to be a Mtron SSD 32GB. I will then use a Rapter for Apps.

Wow you're going all out. Those cases are nice, but quite expensive. Ouch!

Yeah, I spend a lot of time on my machine and this is the first time that I get to look at performance over price and I want to see what the difference will actually be.

If I had money to burn I'd get a nice Lian-Li case. Not that those Zalmans aren't good, but I get nervous when I see lights :p

And for me now as well. Looks much better value than any of the others.

The Antec 900 is a great case for the price. Actually it's a great case for any price.

I'm glad i only upgrade every 3yrs these days; even just choosing the case takes forever.
