Lets say OC'ing is not a factor in the equation:

Which would be better in your opinion for non-gaming (video editing and sound production):

Asus P5B MOBO and e6600
or
Phenom 9500 and Asus M2N68-LA MOBO

Thanks,
JOe K.

I would say the Phenom 9500 becuase it's only about 15-20 bucks more and it's a quad-core which at stock will be as good as any Dual-Core as you want it to be. But if you were going to get Phenom wait for B3 which the rumor is that it will be out by the 26th.

yeah that would be great fas an AMD solution [heck it might even be noticeably cheaper, than going an Intel route], if you want to go Intel, get a cheap P35 mobo abit has their for like $60 after MIR, and a Q6600, but either way will be great. Even if you never o/c it, it will still give u better performance than the AMD, but it maybe cost more than the AMD

I'm looking to possibly get a pre-built phenom 9600 system. I already own the p5b with e6600. My dilemna is whether or not I should sell the e6600 system to get the phenom 9600 system.

Already have a Q6600 with Gigabyte GA-P35 MOBO and 4GB of Dominator. Which is my main production machine (no internet connection).

for my second machine, which is internet/music/video capture/misc/possible network render machine

I'm looking at either keeping my Asus P5B with e-6600 and 3GB PC2-6400

or switching too a Phenom 9500 and Asus M2N68-LA MOBO with and 3GB PC2-6400.

I basically have the opportunity to do this for free.

Phenom are really pieces of crap compared to the Intel quads. If you have a budget and don't mind waiting, get the Phenom, but if you want performance and far less waiting time, get a quad Intel.
Maybe wait for the benchmarks of the B3 version of the Phenom, who knows, it might actually be able to beat a x2 6400+ this time....

I wouldn't say they're "pieces of crap." They're certainly slower than the Q6600 but they're significantly cheaper too. Plus I prefer to support the smaller company. It ensures more competition.

The intel chip you listed as a choice doesnt make much sense. NOBODY should be a e6600 at this point in time. Unless you get a good deal on one. But anyways go with phenom

If you have the opportunity to do this basically for free as you put it, then yeah the phenom makes sense for what you plan on using it for.
