Is there any real advantages to selecting XP Pro 32-bit over just XP Pro???
I am building a new unit and want to purchase the OEM OS software and need to make a decision.
Been around computers for many years and heard all the horror stories mainly with "Application Support", with like IBM OS/2, Apple Mac's, UNIX, etc and don't know enough about "Operating Systems" to make an educated decision.
Unless otherwise stated, XP Pro is 32-bit. The only other version is 64-bit which should be explicitly stated somewhere on the product. The only advantage of 64-bit over 32-bit atm is that it can address more RAM and run 64-bit only apps. (there aren't many consume apps. that are 64-bit)... so really you'd only need it for 4+ GB of RAM.
I don't think you need pro unless you're a system-administrator or security-concise user. There are not many worthy features in Pro. The Home is ok for most everyone. Just throw in a Mcafee security suite or something like that.
Pro also allows the machine to work properly on a network with more than 4 other IP's. I had a machine running Home here but I had to upgrade it because it would not be able to see certain computers on the network. It seemed to only 'see' the first 4 IPs it encountered plus the router, so sometimes it saw more comps and no printers, sometimes some comps not others it was pretty random.
